These enquiries, devised by Ann Moore, support schools in teaching about World War 1. They provide teachers and children with a wide range of sources, many pictorial, to enable an investigation into how children lived prior to the start of World War 1. Through the eyes of three children from different social classes, Patrick, Emily and Eric, two historical enquiries about homes and jobs / occupations, are undertaken
As teachers plan for the new requirements of the history National Curriculum, they may find it useful to use the enquiry on ‘homes’ as a starting point for developing their own chronological study of a theme in British history. Children could go ‘back in time’ from their own 21st Century homes, through to Edwardian, Victorian, Georgian, Tudor, medieval, Anglo Saxon and Roman homes. The fact that the unit looks at homes from three different social classes could run throughout this longitudinal study.
It is hoped that additional historical enquiries linked to Patrick, Emily and Eric, will be developed in the coming months.
