Project Directors

Michael Riley - Director
Michael has been SHP Director since 2008. He is responsible for the strategic direction of SHP, ensuring that the project provides an independent source of ideas and experience for the teaching of history in schools. He uses his two SHP days each week to organise the annual conference and regional courses, to maintain the website and to represent SHP at external meetings. Michael works closely with the Publications Director to develop SHP-Hodder publications.

Please contact Michael if you have questions or suggestions about any aspect of SHP’s work: michael@schoolshistoryproject.org.uk

Ian Dawson - Publications Director
Having been SHP Director in the 1980s, Ian returned to his spiritual home in 1996 to spend one day a week supervising the development of SHP Publications. Since then the remit of that day-a-week has expanded to include representing SHP at meetings, INSET sessions and providing a sounding board and moral support for the Director.

Please contact Ian if you have questions or suggestions about SHP’s publishing programme: ian@schoolshistoryproject.org.uk

Jane Richardson - North East Adviser
I am Head of Humanities and Citizenship Coordinator at Egglescliffe School, Stockton-on-Tees. I have worked in five different secondary schools, first teaching SHP in the early 80s in London. In 2002 I co-authored, with Ian Dawson, the SHP textbook ‘Dying for the Vote’ in the This is History! series. I am particularly interested in the history working class movements and regularly provide workshops at SHP conferences. My most recent claim to infamy has been playing the back end of the horse in one of Ian’s Saturday night conference sessions.

Donald Cumming - Yorkshire Adviser
I am currently Senior Leader for National Challenge at Park Lane High in Halifax. Prior to this I was AST at The Ridings School, with a role in improving Teaching & Learning across the school – using the SHP approach across all subjects! I have also taught in London, and was recently lured into co-authoring a ‘Crime and Punishment Through Time CD-Rom’ with Ian Dawson. My involvement with SHP goes back to my time at Secondary School in Essex where the teenage me studied SHP GCSE History – and I have never looked back.

Muriel Wilkins - South West Adviser
I am Assistant Principal and Learning Director for Humanities at Oasis Academy in Bristol. I started teaching SHP in 1987 and have never looked back!! I have always loved the variety of periods, topics and approaches, the blend between depth and overview and the focus on historical enquiry. SHP helps teachers to make full use of their creativity to tackling big questions about the past. I particularly enjoy building visual memories for my students through different learning activities. I regularly provide INSET for teachers and have written BBC materials for SHP’s History of Medicine.
